How much firewood do you need for a winter?
16.05.2026
Ballpark estimates by home type and heating system — plus the simple rule of thumb for working out your own needs.
The question we hear most often in autumn: "how many sters should I get?". The right answer depends on three things — how big the heated space is, how well it is insulated and what you burn the wood in.
Ballpark figures for a cold season (November–March):
A flat or small house (50–80 m²) heated with a good stove: 4–6 sters of hardwood. If the stove is old, with no heat retention, add 1–2 sters.
A medium house (100–140 m²) with a wood-fired boiler or two stoves: 8–12 sters. Insulation makes the big difference here — an uninsulated house can easily use 15.
A large house (over 150 m²) with a wood boiler: 12–18 sters, depending on insulation and comfort temperature.
The simple rule of thumb: start from last winter's usage. If you don't know it, estimate 1 ster per 10–12 m² for an averagely insulated home with a classic stove, then adjust after the first season. Better to have a ster left over than to run out in January, when prices peak and deliveries slow down.
A few tips that cut consumption: burn only dry wood (under 20% moisture) — green wood loses up to a third of its heat evaporating water; sweep the chimney before the season; don't choke the fire — smouldering dirties the chimney and wastes wood.
We have no minimum order — you can take a single ster as a trial, to see the quality. Use the price calculator to find out on the spot what your needs will cost, with delivery in Prahova, Ilfov and Bucharest, or send us an order straight from the page.
